Standard Door Sizes
There is no single standard door size used in the UK. There are, however, a few door sizes you will see that are common across homes and door manufacturers. These are generally displayed as width x height x depth, usually listed in millimeters:
457 x 1981 x 35mm or 533 x 1981 x 35mm | Often used for wardrobe or cupboard door use |
610 x 1981 x 35mm or 686 x 1981 x 35mm | Used where there may be limited wall space and a smaller door is required |
762 x 1981 x 35mm | Often referred to as a 2’6” door. The most typical internal door sizing in England & Wales |
838 x 1981 x 35mm | Often referred to as a 2’9” door. In most circumstances this provides the required opening width for wheelchair access under the Part ‘M’ mobility requirements of the Building Regulations 2010 |
Door Size Conversion Chart (Metric to Imperial)
The following chart shows internal and external door sizes available in the UK from a variety of manufacturers. If you measure in feet and inches (imperial), these charts will help you work out the metric equivalent, and vice-versa.
Not all manufacturers stock these sizes as standard. Some will offer bespoke made-to-measure services that will custom-build any size door to your own specifications. (Internal door sizes are listed in black. External door sizes are listed in red. Latham’s high security front door sizes are listed in blue).

Standard Door Thicknesses
Internal and external doors are available in various degrees of thickness, depending on the specific use. Thickness is displayed as the depth measurement on the product page, e.g. 762 x 1981 x 35mm.
You may use the following as a general rule of thumb:
Fire Door Sizes
All UK standard door sizes are typically available in a fire door equivalent. Measurements listed in blue in our conversion chart above are some of the available fire door sizes you can purchase from Latham’s Steel Security Doorsets.
Elsewhere, you can usually find fire door sizes ranging from:
- 686 & 762mm x 1981mm
- 526, 626, 726, 826 & 926mm x 2040mm
Alternatively, you can order custom-made fire doors that can be manufactured to your own specifications.
The most common specification for fire doors is their FD rating. This is a certified indication of how fire-resistant the door is, or the length of time it takes for fire to burn through the door.
Extra components and changes in material are used in the core construction of the door to improve its fire rating, which results in an increased thickness of around 45mm. This also means it cannot be trimmed down, so finding a fire door that fits is extremely important.
Fire ratings are stated in minutes and prefixed by the letters “FD”:
- FD30 (30 minutes)
- FD60 (60 minutes – 1 hour)
- FD120 (120 minutes – 2 hours)
- FD180 (180 minutes – 3 hours)
- FD240 (240 minutes – 4 hours)
Sometimes higher ratings are necessary to protect property and assets, as well as people. Fire doors should not be altered in size as this can affect the door’s fire rating and it may not meet fire safety regulations. If you require a custom-made fire door, you will need to speak to a specialist or supplier who will be able to help you.
Also note that the frames, intumescent seals and ironmongery must be verified to comply with the door’s fire certification.
Our stock steel fire rated doors are certified for up to two hours of fire protection, meaning they will cover all FD30, FD60 & FD120 requirements and will help to slow the spread of fire in an emergency situation
Garage Door Sizes
Because garage doors differ from standard internal and external doors, we suggest that you look at garage door specialists and their set of standard door sizes to determine which size will best fit your garage entryway. Standard UK garage door sizes are as follows:
Dimensions are show as Width x Height
METRIC (mm) | IMPERIAL (inches) | IMPERIAL (feet & inches) |
---|---|---|
1981 x 2134 | 78” x 84” | 6’ 6” x 7’ 0” |
2134 x 2134 | 84” x 84” | 7’ 0” x 7’ 0” |
We provide steel double doors large enough to be used as security side hinged garage doors in frame sizes from 1295mm to 2195mm wide.
How to Measure Your Door
The starting point is to always measure the opening that you have to fill (the space where your current door and frame is). Most doors can be trimmed/planed down to suit the opening you have, but this threshold for adjusting down your doors depends on your manufacturer.
Step 1: Measure the Width
Take 3 measurements for the width at the top, middle and bottom of the door, by running a measuring tape along one side of the door frame from left to right. Note down the smallest measurement.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Take 3 measurements for the height from the top to the bottom of the door, by running a measuring tape in a straight line on the left, middle and right sides of the door frame. Note down the smallest measurement.
Please note:
Some older doors may not be perfectly rectangular, so you may need to repeat this step but at another point on the door. You should write down a few measurements, then use the smallest measurement as the door width or height.
Step 3: Measure the Thickness
Run a measuring tape from the edge on one side, to the edge of the other. Note down the measurement. Measure the door jamb on the frame to check that they are a similar size as you may need to know both.

What Tools Do I Need?
If you followed the 3 steps listed above, you can guess that the only essential tool you will need is a measuring tape.
We provide measuring tapes at Latham’s Hardware. There are also apps such as Tape Measure and EasyMeasure from the Apple store, or AR Ruler App for Android from Google app stores if you don’t have a measuring tape readily available.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
What is the standard door height in the UK?
1981mm (metric) – 78 inches – 6’6” (imperial) in England and Wales (in Scotland, it is a little taller at 2040mm – 80 inches).
What is the standard door width in the UK?
762mm (metric) – 30 inches – 2’6” (imperial) in England and Wales (in Scotland, it is a little smaller, usually measuring 726mm – 28.5 inches).
How do I measure for a replacement internal wooden door?
Run a tape measure inside the door frame and across the width (top, middle and bottom). Note down the largest number to determine the required door width. Apply the same instruction when finding the measurement for the door height – measure the left, middle and right vertical sides and note down the longest number.
How do I measure the size for a double door?
Firstly, measure the opening size of the door. Divide the width by two to give an approximate width for each door. If the frame isn’t already fitted you will need to allow for this. Most common frame width is 30mm both sides, as well as some tolerance for fitting (approximately 2-3mm each side).
Opening Width – Frame Width (e.g. 60mm) – Fitting Adjustment (6mm) = Double Door Width ÷ 2 = Single Door Width
Compare the single door width with the sizes available in your chosen design to determine whether a standard option will work or if you require bespoke made-to-measure doors. When fitting double doors, you also need to consider how you would like the doors to meet in the middle, e.g. square or rebated meeting stiles.
Fitting double doors isn’t always plain sailing and we would always recommend using a knowledgeable joiner to help you get the perfect fit.
How much does it cost to fit an internal or external door?
You should expect the average cost for an internal door frame replacement to be around £60. For external door frame replacement, you should expect to pay around £110, but costs can vary. Latham’s selection of contemporary high security front doors ranges from £649.99+VAT.
How long does it take to install an internal or external door?
Fitting a new internal door frame should take a professional around 2-3 hours. For external doors, an experienced tradesperson would usually take around 4-5 hours. Installing a steel door and frame with installation aids such as wind out adjusters can take as little as 60 minutes.
